Why Beyond Vegan Is Becoming A Grateful Plate

We have news, and it comes with a story.

Beyond Vegan — the little scratch-made café at 6208 W 87th St in Westchester, Los Angeles — is becoming A Grateful Plate. Same corner near LAX. Same kitchen. Same people coming in early to chop, simmer, and build everything from whole ingredients. What's changing is the name over the door, and if you've ever stood on the sidewalk trying to explain to a friend what we actually cook, you already understand why.

The name that kept telling the wrong story

When we chose "Beyond Vegan," we meant it as a promise: we go beyond the label. Vegan was the floor, not the ceiling — no soy, no processed fillers, no shortcuts, just real food made from scratch.

Then the wider food world caught up with the word "beyond," and it started meaning something else entirely. To most people walking past our window, "Beyond Vegan" now reads like a fake-meat outlet — a place flipping factory-made patties. That's not a small misunderstanding. It's the exact opposite of what happens in our kitchen.

Here's the plain truth: we have never served a Beyond burger. We have never served an Impossible patty. Not once, not on a special, not as a substitution. We don't cook with soy at all — no tofu, no tempeh, no seitan — and we steer clear of GMO, hybrid, and processed foods on principle.

So the name was working against us in both directions. The eaters we most wanted to feed — people who read labels, who care what's actually in their food — saw the sign and kept walking, assuming we were the very thing they were trying to avoid. And folks hunting for a fake-meat fix walked in and found chickpea chowder simmering and produce being broken down by hand. A name is supposed to be a promise. Ours had become a mix-up.

What we actually are

Strip the confusion away and here's the kitchen underneath.

We're a whole-food vegan café, guided by Dr. Sebi's nutritional approach — we're not affiliated with Dr. Sebi or his estate; his thinking simply shapes how we choose ingredients: whole foods, ancient grains, indigenous foods, nothing engineered in a lab. Everything is scratch-made and cooked to order — quesadillas, tacos, sandwiches, salads, our chickpea chowder, smoothies and fruit bowls. Raw #JUICEBAE juice sits cold in the café, pressed from real produce.

And we're a meal-prep kitchen, too. The same cooks who work the line prep grab-and-go meals in oven-safe trays, stocked in two merchandiser fridges — grab one for today or stack a week's worth, and heat it here or take it hot or cold. You can browse how that works on our meal prep and grab-and-go page.

Black-owned, born in the Inglewood and LA community, and proud of both. That story doesn't change with the sign.

Why "A Grateful Plate"

We tried on a lot of names. This one stuck because it isn't clever — it's honest.

Gratitude is the ethos of this kitchen. Gratitude for real food, grown from the earth, that doesn't need to be disguised or processed into something it isn't. Gratitude for the hands that prep it every morning. Gratitude for a neighborhood that kept showing up for a tiny café with two tables outside, two inside, and a bar counter with three stools.

A grateful plate is a plate you can trust. It's food made by people who respect the ingredients enough to leave them whole, and respect you enough to cook them from scratch. The new name doesn't describe a trend. It describes a posture — the way we've always stood at the stove.

What changes

Honestly? The name. The sign, the website, the way you find us when you search.

That's the whole list. This is a correction, not a reinvention. We're not chasing a new concept, a new menu philosophy, or a new crowd. We're finally putting the right words on what we've been doing since day one.

If you've bookmarked us, follow the transition here and on our About page — we'll keep both names visible while everyone catches up.

What never changes

The kitchen

Same stoves, same scratch cooking, same refusal list: no soy, no tofu, no tempeh, no seitan, no Impossible or Beyond products, no GMO or hybrid ingredients, no processed junk. Whole foods, ancient grains, indigenous foods — cooked to order, the way it's always been.

The people

Big Maria has been running cold food and prep for about seven years. Mara has led meal prep for about five. Cameron, the owner, still picks the dishes for each week's rotation himself. These are the same hands and the same standards — a name on a sign doesn't touch that.

The philosophy

We'll keep saying it until the neighborhood can recite it: real food, made from scratch, guided by Dr. Sebi's nutritional approach, with nothing fake standing in for the real thing. If an ingredient needs a factory to exist, it doesn't come through our door.

The address

6208 W 87th St, Los Angeles, CA 90045 — Westchester, minutes from LAX, with Inglewood in our roots. Same tiny footprint. Same fridges stocked with grab-and-go meals and raw #JUICEBAE juice. Come by before or after the name changes; the food won't know the difference. Directions and details live on our visit & location page.

What's coming next

While we're being honest about who we are, here's a look at where we're headed: a clean, scratch-made burger is coming — built from whole ingredients, and emphatically not an Impossible or Beyond patty — along with breakfast items. Neither is on the menu yet, so consider this a promise rather than an announcement. When they land, you'll see them first on the menu.

Thank you — sincerely

A rebrand is a strange thing to thank people for, but here we are. Every regular who explained us to a skeptical friend — "no, it's not that kind of beyond" — did the work this new name should have been doing all along. A Grateful Plate is partly named for you.

Come see us. The sign is new. The plate is exactly what it's always been.

FAQ

Is A Grateful Plate the same restaurant as Beyond Vegan?

Yes — same location at 6208 W 87th St in Westchester, Los Angeles, same owner, same staff, same kitchen and cooking philosophy. Only the name is changing, because "Beyond Vegan" kept getting confused with Beyond Meat, which we've never served.

Did Beyond Vegan ever serve Beyond Meat or Impossible products?

No, never. We've never cooked with Beyond, Impossible, or any processed meat substitute — and no soy either, so no tofu, tempeh, or seitan. Everything is scratch-made from whole foods, ancient grains, and indigenous ingredients.

Is the menu changing with the new name?

No. The cook-to-order menu — quesadillas, tacos, sandwiches, salads, chickpea chowder, smoothies and fruit bowls — and our grab-and-go meal prep continue as-is. A scratch-made burger and breakfast items are planned for the future, but they're coming soon, not live yet.

Where is A Grateful Plate located?

6208 W 87th St, Los Angeles, CA 90045, in Westchester near LAX and Inglewood. It's a small café — a couple of tables inside and out, plus a bar counter — with two grab-and-go fridges and raw #JUICEBAE juice sold in-café.
